An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, the prophetic words first spoken by Benjamin Franklin, ring truer nowadays than ever before.
Nourishing Friends is a Mediterranean & Natural Whole Foods cookbook with the emphasis on healthy foods to prevent disease. It is authored by Health Guru Gigi Cohen & author and fundraiser Karen Dubrofsky, whose previous books include the Gazette bestsellers Cooking With Canada’s Best (2009) and Montreal Cooks (2007). The book has also been certified and is thus completely Kosher.
100% of the proceeds from Nourishing Friends are destined for the Centre for Colon and Rectal Surgery at the McGull University Health Centre, and The Alisa & Tony Calvo Fund for Cedars Can Support, which exists to help cancer patients and their families.
Formerly the owner of Jessy Naturel which she successfully ran for over 15 years in the Pointe Claire Village, Gigi Cohen currently co-owns Café Juicy Lotus alongside her daughter in the heart of Monkland Village, where she is the resident health aficionado. In addition, Gigi has been a whole foods and natural foods educator, vegetarian and vegan gourmet cooking teacher for over 25 years.

Everyone has been affected personally in one way or another by illness and/or cancer, and fundraiser Karen Dubrofsky, is no stranger to this. Over the past ten years, she has been a philanthropic powerhouse, raising over a million dollars for a variety of foundations and research centers in the process.
Nourishing Friends has been in the making for three years, and is Karen’s third high-profile, non-profit cookbook venture. All of the proceeds from Nourishing Friends will benefit the Centre for Colon and Rectal Surgery at the McGill University Health Centre, and The Alexia & Anthony Calvillo Fund for Cedars CanSupport, which exists to help cancer patients and their families.
Karen’s first book, Montreal Cooks, sold 15,000 copies raising $750,000 for Women’s Oncology in the process, and was also released in French as Les Saveurs de Montreal. It also remained on The Gazette’s Bestseller list for 43 weeks.
Her last book, Cooking With Canada’s Best, succeeding in raising over $300,000 towards autism research and continues to raise funds for that cause. Collaborating with top chefs including local favorites Chuck Hughes (Garde Manger) and Stephen Leslie (Taverne sur le Square), the book showcased renowned restaurants from across Canada and their head chefs.
